Climate change is not just warming the world... it's freezing it...
...When we say the phrase "climate change", it is often used interchangeably with the phrase "global warming". While these two topics are largely intertwined, global warming is only one aspect of our changing climate. More accurately, the phrase "climate change" indicates the extreme and significant changes in our planet and its weather.
For example, in June of 2022, there were "increased extreme weather events due to climate change" (climate.gov). These weather events go beyond summer heat waves and hotter overall global temperatures; they can include more frequent tornados or more violent hurricanes, and as summer and autumn fly by, these extremes represent the freezing-cold winters plaguing the globe.
Yale Climate Connections shared that, despite the overall warming of the Earth, "short-term variations in weather, such as cold snaps—rapid drops in air temperature that result in consecutive days of colder-than-average weather—are still occurring." Simply put, "these cold snaps will cause colder-than-average weather" (Yale Climate Connections).
For homeless populations around the globe facing the elements in an increasingly dangerous outdoor environment and with increasingly harsh winters, proper vehicles of warmth are more of a necessity than ever. Warm hats may very well offer a greater chance at survival in the harsh cold.
